ASTM – A36 is a standard carbon steel specification and often used by fabricators (easily welded and riveted) and in construction. It has a variety of uses and is available across products.
ASTM – A572 is a High-strength, Low alloy structural steel and used commonly in general construction and bridge use.
ASTM – A588 also known as Corten, is a weathering steel and often used as an architectural element due to how it transforms when exposed to the elements. It is popular in artistic sculptures across the country and around the globe. It is a treated chemically so that when used outdoors it will, overtime, change colors until in the last stage it develops a rust-colored patina that lasts for years and years. Unlike standard carbon steel which, when exposed to the elements causes pitting and deterioration, Corten withstands atmospheric conditions
ASTM – A992, like A572 is a High-strength, Low alloy structural steel but is a Multi-grade alloy covering the A36 and A572 alloys.
ASTM – A709* is also a Multi-grade alloy and is the requirement for DOT projects. A709 is all encompassing of the following ASTM grades:
- A709, Grade 36 is identical to A36
- A709, Grade 50 is identical to A572 Grade 50
- A709, Grade 50S is the same as A992
- A709, Grade 50W is the same as A588 Grade B
*ASTM A709 also defines Non-fracture critical (T) tension component and (F) Fracture critical tension component impact testing requirements.
ASTM A106 GR B and C is a seamless pressure pipe and is commonly used in refineries of oil and gas, boilers, ships, power plants and pressure vessels because these gases or fluids have higher temperatures and pressure points.
